about

This is a newly 're-mastered' and expanded version of The Jaguar Club's first ever EP. Initially released in October 2006 only CD. So many CD's. We'd ordered thousands. We gave them away at our EP release party, we mailed hundreds to clubs and promoters, we sold hundreds at the merch table on tour, but there were so many copies... eventually we took to slapping stickers advertising our next NYC show on them and leaving stacks of them to be uses as coasters in local bars.

In mid 2006 the band had invested what money we possessed on studio time only to have our guitarist promptly quit after the sessions. We re-grouped as a trio with a significantly altered sound but we still needed recordings to book shows and found DIY was our only option. Having no idea what we were doing we set up our gear like we were on a stage, threw up some mics, and recorded live to an old (even then) Roland 4-track recorder. The songs did eventually end up in a computer to overdub the vocals and 'mix' the results, and I recall having lengthy discussions amongst ourselves about what exactly compression did. We used a photo of the wallpaper in a Lincoln Center bathroom my wife had taken as artwork.

It al turned out pretty well. Despite it's scrappy vibe I've always had a fondness for this record and it's DIY energy - so one of my pandemic projects in the past few years was to try and improve the sound of these self-recorded tracks as best I could and get it properly released in the modern fashion.

Along the way I re-discovered a useable recording of 'Perfect Timing' in it's original frenetic post-punk mode - a song that a few years later would close our album 'And We Wake Up Slowly' in a completely re-imagined form (with Yoi emoting on Garth Hudson's old piano and a dragon making feedback noises.). It was a great arrangement but we could never seem to do it live, so we stopped trying and one of my favorite JC songs disappeared.

I also included a poorly-recorded but highly-spirited version of 'This Year' recorded live at NYC's Cakeshop (RIP.). The show was, as I recall, the hometown ending of a lengthy tour and people were actually in the audience. Not a great recording perhaps, but a performance that nicely captures earliest trio version of the band. Wish we had more live recordings form those days, but glad to have this one.
